Of the 500,000 Laysan Albatross Chicks born on Midway Atoll in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands each year, 200,000 die, mostly of starvation and dehydration. A 2-year study funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency showed that chicks that died from those causes had twice as much plastic in their stomachs than those that died due to other reasons.
